- 1816 - Republican James Monroe defeated Federalist Rufus King 183 to 34 to become the 5th President.
- Within a few years the Federalist party withered away and disappeared.
- Monroe wanted to promote national unity.
- 1817 - Monroe went on a good will circuit around the nation.
- Arguments about the War of 1812 - Northerners opposed the war because it hurt the merchant class, Southerners supported the war - these arguments dissipated.
- Boston newspaper called the good circuit tour the "Era of Good Feelings"
